This paper elaborates the source of English synonyms , the combination of synonyms, the types of synonyms and the importace of studying synonyms. It elaborates the historical reasons why English synonyms are so rich. The main reason is that British was conquered many times by orhcr nationalities. The native language combined properly with the foreign words, then forming a lot of synonyms. They are different in style. English synonyms can be classified into the following four types accoding to the differences in semanties: absolute synonyms, ideographic synonyms, stylistic synonyms and the contextual synonyms. Studying English synonyms, knowing and mastering English synonyms will enrich our ability in applying English language so as to apply English language properly.
