As two basic cognitive styles,metaphor and metonymy can effectively push people to comprehend English reading materials.They can promote learners'vocabulary acquisition,help readers rapidly grasp main ideas in a top-down way and enable readers to make reasonable predictions and inferences.A related experiment is done to confirm their positive effects on reading comprehension.
