Old Chinese Words with New Senses and Research into Their Translations

从语言学的层面,分析旧词新义现象产生的3个原因:社会发展的需求,语言使用者的需求,语言经济原则的制约;指出其变化的特点:词义的变化与时俱进,采纳吸收行业用语;并在此基础上探讨其英译的原则和方法。

This paper analyzes the three reasons for the phenomenon of old Chinese words with new senses from a perspective of lingustics:requirement of social development,requirement of language users,and re- striction of principle of language economy;points out the characteristic of this special phenomenon:change of meanings keeps pace with the times and adopts and absorbs business terms;and puts forward some practi- cal translation principles and approaches from a perspective of linguistics.
