It is the 2nd time hevisited Beijing this year. The Ist time, when he ar-rived and cheered for China Unicom's issuing CDMAuser numbers in January, he was escorted by a bigcrowd, while his second trip to Beijing seemed some-what quiet. Neither the officials from the InformationIndustry Ministry and China Unicom nor the repre-sentatives from 19 local CDMA mobile phone manu-facturers attended the press conference for BREW plat-form. What has happened? The narrow band CDMA project, initiated by ChinaUnicom last year, has not been going on well.As it isbuilding the narrow band CDMA network, ChinaUnicom has made preparations for building CDMA 1Xnetwork. Now it has to make choice between Java ofSUN or Motorola and BREW of QUALCOMM as itsapplication platform. It does not intend to letQUALCOMM do business without competitors, be-cause the lesson of SouthKorea shows that toomuch dependence onQUALCOMM means aquite high price.
