A phenomenon of isolated inner-urban areas determines Chicago's widespread segregation and significantly contributes to the city's profound social and ethnic conflicts. Highways, train-lines, waterways, parklands, and industrial corridors create barriers that cut the metropolitan grid into isolated irregular patches. Segregation and ghettoization are further amplified by Chicago's zoning ordinance; Comparable to the Charter of Athens, it distributes the city into separated mono-functional sectors that nearly identically coincide with the described urban barriers and patches. Following up on these problematic occurrences the paper will discuss architectural means for increasing social-urban interfaces, fostering ethnic and cultural diversity as well as stabilizing the urban economy through attracting 'Mixed Industries'. As a central aspect of rethinking urban redevelopment conventions the paper will introduce the program of Fatness.
