A cross-linguistic study was conducted on the generic features, metadiscourse and academic identities in academic book reviews written in English and Chinese. Based on Hyland ’s(2005) model of metadiscourse, this study coded positive and negative comments as well as metadiscourse markers in the comparable corpus by using UAM corpus tool 2:0 Statistical analysis showed that English book reviews were more critical. By using a cluster of metadiscourse, English book reviewers enact more distinct academic identities of reviewers while Chinese book reviewers project more distinct academic identities of introducers. By enquiring the editors of key domestic and international linguistics journals, it was found that the above differences were closely related to the journals’ different expectations of book reviews and the status quo of linguistic research at home and abroad.
