Southern Jiangsu's Linguists' Influence on Chinese Simplification Policy during the Period of the Republic of China

民国时期苏南一批语言学家和一些文教人士认识到汉字落后造成了国家的落后,于是他们开始了汉字简化的理论和实践探索,他们发表文章对汉字简化进行鼓与呼,成立简字研究会,向政府的教育部门提交简字议案,编写简化字谱,督促政府颁布简化汉字的法令等。这些人士对民国时期的汉字简化政策产生了重要的影响。

During the Period of the Republic of China, some linguists and educators in Southern Jiangsu realized that the backwardness of the country attributed a lot to the dragged status of the Chinese language so they set about to explore the theory and practice of Chinese simplification and took many measures accordingly, including publishing articles on advocating the simplification of Chinese, establishing relevant organizations, submitting bills to Education Department of the Government, compiling simplified character table, urging the government to issue policies on Chinese simplification. What they had done had a far reaching influence on the Chinese Simpli-fication Policy during that period.
