Guangzhou's Contributions to Introduction of the Western Cultures 300 Years before the Opium War

在鸦片战争爆发前 3个世纪里 ,广州对输入西方文化作出了巨大的贡献 ,这不仅表现在广州是西方传教士来华传教的首选之地、西方科学技术输入的窗口和西洋艺术入华的桥梁 ,而且还表现在它是西方近代文化设施最早的移植之地与最早出现西方文化、教育。

This article maintains that Guangzhou had made great contribution towards the introduction of western cultures over the three centuries before the Opium War broke out, which was reflected in the fact that Guangzhou served not only as the first place in China where western priests come to preach, as an exhibit_window through which western science and technology were introduced, and as a bridge across which western arts reached China, but it was also the first place in China where modern western cultural facilities were transplanted and where western cultural, educational and medical organizations were established.
