This paper mainly explores the discourse-pragmatic function and cognitive motivation of third-person nominal anaphors in subject/topic position in discourse.Nominal anaphora in discourse mainly serves to mark shifts of conceptual units,such as shifts in paragraph,time,space,character,event,foreground/background,point of view,turn-taking,and so on.Nominal anaphora is the linguistic choice made by the communicator to raise communicative efficiency with regard to the balance between cognitive effort and contextual effect.Cognitively speaking,nominal anaphora reflects the referential intention and subjective viewpoint of the conceptualizer;used to establish the cognitive reference point and open new referential dominions.Furthermore,nominal anaphora may profile a more objectified construal of the referent,distancing the conceptualizer and the referent conceptually.
