There is a complex spirit of 'border - cultural - city intellectual in Lin Geng' s poems, because of the special living reality and his own aesthetic choice. His poems express the spirit of the intellectuals at that time who were deeply read in the ancient culture. Their ideals and reality contradict each other. But he keeps the enterprising spirit and youthful vigor of the May Fourth Movement (1919) all along. He praises life and extols youth, natural beauty and childlike innocence .He has a unbiased, cool and romantic enthusiasm which makes him bravely face the society and think about life. In his pomes there is a pressing, roused, perplexed and worried calmness which appreciates the world in a leisurely manner. He understands that the imbalance of materialism and spirit will destroy humanity and beauty, so he will seek more beautiful things in life. He is a poet and sage, who brings out in his poems the quality of spiritual depth and enduring artistic charm beyond romance.
