Village and its Administration in the Tang Dynasty

村落在唐代有着较大的发展,政府愈加重视对村落的管理与控制,专门设置了负责乡村社会实际管理的村正,具体承担诸如农业生产督察、户籍管理、赋役征发和治安保障等行政事务。以村正的设立为主要标志,村落作为乡村行政单位在唐代得到法律的承认。

Village developed greatly in the Tang Dynasty. The government attached great importance on village administration. A village head (Cunzheng) was appointed to in charge of the village, bearing responsibilities of agricultural production, household registration, tax and labor collection, public security and other village affairs. So it is safe to say that village was recognized as an administrative unit legally in the Tang Dynasty marked by the assignment of village head (Cunzheng).
