The silk trade between China and the Southeast Asia goes back to ancient times. In the early years of the Ming period, owing to the ban on maritime trade with foreign countries and the rulers' mentality of 'Small Tributes and Larger Return Gifts', the trade between the two regions mainly took the form of tribute trade. Private trade developed somewhat, but was not comparable to that of the previous dynasty. With the later development of the trade between the two regions, Chinese silk achieved greater marketing scope in Southeast Asia and maintained its export advantage.
