The coastal area of Qi state was famous for its salt production. In Pre-Qin historical records, salt of Qi were titled Qingzhou Gongyan(青州贡盐,tribute salt from Qingzhou),Beihai zhi Yan(北海之盐,North Sea salt)and Quzhan zhi Yan(渠展之盐,Quzhan salt). As a place name of Qi,the name of Quzhan first appeared in chapter Dishu(地数)in Guanzi(管子).It said that,"There were Ruhan bronzes in Chu State,Quzhan salt in Qi and Liaodong salt in Yan state".This record indicates that salt industry was an important economic pillar of Qi.As for the location of Quzhan,Fang Xuanling, the first annotator of Guanzi, stated that Quzhan should be at the Jishui(济水)estuary, where people made salt.Salt-making sites at Guangrao Nanheya and Dongying Beixin, which were located at the very end of ancient Jishui estuary area, proved that Fang Xuanling was right.By consulting historical records and archaeological data, the author demonstrates that Quzhan was at Jishui estuary area, and its core area was located in morden Dongying city.In addition, the author demonstrates in another perspective that the Quzhan salt had played a significant role in the development of Qi state.
