Analyzing the Identity of Donors in the Ming Dynasty Caves in North Shaanxi

在前后四次系统考察陕北石窟的基础上,以明代石窟碑记题刻资料为研究对象,着重分析明代石窟的功德主身份及修窟原因。陕北明代石窟功德主大体分家族、十方、军户、官员,他们参与修窟的原因很多,主要还是着眼于现世利益,为求福报而捐资施财修建石窟。

Based on four systematic investigations of the grottoes in north Shaanxi,this paper focuses on the inscriptions in the Ming dynasty caves and analyzes the identities of the donors or sponsors and the reasons for the construction of the caves.Donor figures represent just about every strata of Ming dynasty society and can be divided into the different groups of:families,common people,military residents,and officials.These patrons took part in the construction of the caves for many reasons,the most popular motivations being to receive spiritual blessings and protection,and for good fortune and economic luck.
