这年夏天,'目击者'眼中的上海有了大变化。饥荒、乞丐、弃婴等现象有所缓和,露置的棺材、落后的防疫体系依旧是棘手的问题。鸦片战争后,国家对鸦片、走私、军事和外交领域采取的措施都影响着华洋杂处的上海。作为一个虔诚的基督徒,'目击者'悲悯困苦的百姓,嘲讽腐败的清政府,同时也流露出鲜明的反战态度。

This summer,Shanghai in the eye of the"Spectator"has experienced great changes.Phenomenon like famine,beggary and outcast children has diminished.Unburied coffins and the out—of—date antiepidemic system are still big problems.After the Opium War,the measures taken by the government to such fields as opium,smuggling,military and foreign affairs has influenced Shanghai.As a devout Christian,the"Spectator"takes pity on the poor,satirizes the decayed Qing government and shows an obvious anti—war stance.
