严景耀:提篮桥首位华籍副典狱长

Yan Jingyao-the First Chinese Deputy Warden of Tilanqiao Prison

严景耀(1905年-1976年),浙江余姚人,中国著名的社会学家、犯罪学家和监狱学家。早年毕业于北京燕京大学社会学系,后入美国芝加哥大学学习,是中国历史上第一个犯罪学博士。1936年9月至1943年任上海提篮桥监狱副典狱长。新中国成立后长期从事教育科研工作,是全国第一、二、三届人大代表。1976年1月,在北京病逝。

Yan Jingyao(1905-1976),a native of Yuyao Zhejiang Province,was a prominent sociologist,criminologist and penologist in China.Graduated from the Sociology Department Yenching University in his early years,he later went on studying in University of Chicago,becoming the first Chinese who obtained Ph.D in criminology.From September 1936 to 1943,he served as Deputy Warden in Shanghai Tilanqiao Prison and after the liberation of Shanghai,he long engaged in education and research development,once being a representative in the 1st,2nd and 3rd National People’s Congress.In January 1976,he passed away in Beijing.
