The pair of the bronze lion sculptures came from Britain and placed outside the rebuilt HSBC Building on the bund in Shanghai in 1923 was the first generation HSBC lions. In 1935, the third Headquarters of HSBC in Hong Kong commissioned the second generation bronze lions, which were modeled on the Shanghai ones from Shanghaibased British sculptor Wagstaff. Since then, the Hong Kong lions named Stephen and Stitt have always been experiencing trails and hardships of the times together with Hong Kong residents except when they were stranded in Japan for a short period during WWII while the Shanghai lions have been keeping in the storeroom for quite a long time, which may be displayed in the near future.
