What is the historical role of the GATT within the multilateral trade system in its development process? The WTO gives the answer by its official publication as follows:'The GATT is dead,long live the GATT.'The above reply is rather a smart riddle than a clear answer.This paper attempts to make a macro and dynamic analysis,from an international law scientist's perspective,of the role and the achieve- ments of the GATT within the multilateral trade system in its development history,so as to deepen the understanding of the functions and features of the WTO and its law from a historical perspective,and to further understand the significance of the interna- tional political-economic context in which China implements the WTO Agreements.
