Re-reading Theodore Dreiser's autobiographical novel 'The Genius,' this essay attempts to address the problems of the literary self-fashioning of American authors at the turn of the 20th century. Taking his experiences as a 'cultural seismograph' registering the cultural tremor during the industrial transformation of American society, the essay explores Dreiser's authorial image, his aesthetic transformation, and his decoding of the public consciousness which has changed from productionist ideology to consumption-oriented ideology
