Based on a close-reading of Eliot's 'Whispers of Immortality', this paper seeks to clarify the background and basic concepts of, as well as the disputes over, Eliot's 'Dissociation of Sensibility'. The paper points out that an objective appraisal of 'Dissociation of Sensibility' would entail discussions on Eliot's concept of 'Unified Sensibility' and that for all the casual and precarious assumptions noted by critics in 'Unified Sensibility', there lies, in his 'Unified Sensibility', Eliot's early preoccupation and na?ve idealization of how good poetry should be composed.
