Titus Andronicus, the first Shakespearean tragedy, has long been neglected and underestimated by literary scholars, who accuse it of vulgar, cruel and lowly descriptions. However, the accusation is partial and not well grounded, for such descriptions, being part of the tradition of Western tragedies and related to the Renaissance vogue, embody the persistent art of Shakespearean tragedies. The downfall of Titus, a hero of the patriarchal society, reflects the irreconcilable contradictions between the sempiternal pursuit of man and the ever-changing views of human values.
