《白孔雀》中的莱蒂形象在自然与文明的冲突中表现出两重性 :既受自然本能的驱使 ,追求真挚的爱情 ;又受到文明的异化 ,违心地嫁给不爱的人。莱蒂是死亡意象的象征 ,体现出一种占有欲和控制欲 ,是劳伦斯后来所塑造的一系列“精神型”女性形象的雏形。

Lettie, the protagonist in The White Peacock, shows her dual characters in the conflict between nature and civilization. On the one hand, driven by her nature, she pursued true love. On the other hand, she married the man she didn't love because of the social pressure which alienated her from her true love. Lettie is a symbol of death, which indicates the desire of possession and control And she is the microcosm of 'intellectual female' created by Lawrence.
