Saussure’s Views on Linguistic Value in Language as a System

索绪尔认为，语言是一个纯粹的价值系统，该系统是由它的各项要素的暂时状态所决定的。因此，共时（静态）语言学必须与历时（演化）语言学分开。语言价值的意义表现在它既揭示了“语言是形式而不是实质”，同时又是语言系统的核心成分和单位划分的依据。本文重点探讨语言价值的特征及其意义。

According to Saussure, language is a system of pure values, determined by the temporary state of its constituent elements. Therefore, synchronic (static) linguistics must be distinguished from diachronic (evolutionary) linguistics. Linguistic value is significant in that it not only reveals that 'the language itself is a form, not a substance' but also is the core element of language as a system and the basis on which units are delimited. The present paper focuses on the characteristics and significance of linguistic value.
