A rescue excavation at the Zhumucun site was conducted by a team from the Archaeological Institute of Suzhou during November and December in 2012. It is evident that the Zhumu Mound is an artificial sacrifice altar and burial mound during the Liangzhu period and the Zhumucun site was a settlement simultaneous with the mound. The excavation uncovered the core area of the settlement surrounded by a moat and paddy field, together with more than 300 features such as mounds, burials, pits, wells, and ditches. This provides significant empirical materials for studying development of rice agriculture and settlement pattern during the Liangzhu period.
