Jiuzi was the oldest city to be documented in pre-Qin literature. An analysis to compare the characteristics of Jiuzi with that of ancient capitals in general indicates that Jiuzi was the capital city of the Wu state from late Western Zhou to early Spring and Autumn: The place names of the Wu state contain no actual meanings but phonetic imitation by people of different regions and time periods towards the Wu language – The ancient pronunciation of Jiuzi sounded similar to Gouwu; The Wu state had no yi(simple settlement without an ancestry temple) but only du(state capital) as there were no complete schemes for officials or administration; Jiuzi neighbored with the Chu state to the west and held a strategic location in the waterway of the Yue state in the east; It is close to the Western Zhou Tangjiashan tombs belonging to the royal family of the Wu; The neighboring Dagongshan copper ore was the key economic engine of the Wu state.
