Characteristics of Teaching Innovations in the United States:A Case Study of the Flipping Calculus Project

Flipping is a new teaching method that is growing increasingly popular around the world. In this paper we discuss some characteristics of teaching innovations in the United States through a detailed description of Flipping Calculus, a departmental project at a private university. Several important research results from this flipping project are presented, including statistical comparisons of the grades of flipping classes to those of traditional lecture classes, as well as a student attitudinal survey. Furthermore,we share our thoughts about the future development of higher education, especially changes that have been brought by the introduction of the latest educational technology.
