Chinese and American University Naming:a Reflection of Society,History and Culture

我们了解一所大学从知道它的名字开始。然而,大学命名的社会语言学意义却常常深藏不露,被人忽略。本文试图通过分析中国与美国大学的命名以揭示它们的历史和文化涵义,希望能借此帮助理解大学命名的重要性,并为了解国与国之间的文化与教育差异提供更多线索。

The first thing we know about a university is its name.However,what it reflects sociotinguistically is often hidden and neglected.This paper attempts to reveal the historical and cultural implications of university naming by means of comparing and contrasting university names in China and those in America.It’s hoped that this might throw some light on the sociolinguisfic significance in university naming practice and provide some dues to the understanding of cultural and educational differences between countries.
