This study examined the problems American teachers encountered in an intensive English training program in China.Qualitative data, such as observations and interviews, were collected. The results of the study suggest that Chinese students'silence, which is considered no feedback by American teachers,is the major problem that American teachers encounter in class.Educational and cultural differences between the United States and China are found to be the causes of the problem.Various teaching strategies are used by American teachers and great efforts are made by Chinese students in order to cope with the problem.More effective communication between American teachers and Chinese students is established in class after three weeks.Findings of the study imply that cross-cultural training programs can be carried out before similar intercultural communication programs are held in order to achieve better instruction effects.
