This paper makes a thorough study on an American short story,Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, focusing on the various symbolisms applied in image description, and as well in character portrayal, setting creation and plot construction. The story's rich symbolic meaning proves it being a subtle allegory of modem western world, mirroring post-war capitalist society, revealing such phenomena as twisted human nature, 'pseudo-democracy'and power manipulation. In an age when faith and beliefs are lost, evil and violence prevail, what will become of human society? What will become of human nature? The story gives great shocks and provokes long meditation.
