Willa Cather(1873—1947) and Xiao Hong(1911—1942),though living on opposite ends of earth, surprisingly have a lot in common. Both of them set most of their stories in a small lonely town, which is similar to the writers' real hometowns and where they first found their own identities in real life. They both took a ride on the main stream of the society for a time and reached their social pinnacles in that period, but for some reasons they eventually chose to stay out of the onrushing main stream for the rest of their lives and be subjective observers out there. This distance allowed them to observe their time in a unique way, meanwhile it brought them misunderstanding and harsh criticism. This article will analyze the inevitability of this situation from the angles of their own life experiences and the feminine identities.
