The Macrostructure of English Research Articles:Similarities and Differences

本文采用Swales的体裁分析法对机械工程学科英语学术论文的宏观结构进行了分析,并从功能语法学派体裁分析理论的语场概念出发将该学科的论文结构与语言学及计算机等学科学术论文的宏观结构进行了比较,进而探讨学科内容及研究性质两个语场因素对英语学术论文宏观结构的影响。结果显示:实验型论文的宏观结构在不同学科中差异不大;而以往研究关注较少的理论型论文的宏观结构则由于研究方法的特殊性及缺乏已达共识的理论基础等而呈现出较大的学科差异性。通过对学术论文宏观结构的功能分析,本研究丰富了体裁分析内容,并对学术英语的阅读及写作教学有教学指导意义。

This paper presents a genre analysis of the macrostructure of research articles(RAs) in the field of Mechanical Engineering,adopting a functional genre approach.By comparing the macrostructure of RAs between different disciplines,we explore how the macrostructure of RAs are influenced by the discipline as well as the nature of the research.Our findings for experimental RAs reveal that their macrostructure conforms largely to the conventional IMRD model.For Theoretical RAs,mostly neglected in previous research,they present different frameworks,varying with RA fields.Adopting a functional perspective to RA macrostructure,this study enriches genre analysis and is of pedagogical significance to the teaching of RA reading and writing.
