在十七世纪前,英国没有自己民族风格的园林,只是仿效欧洲其他国家规则式的造园。如意大利文艺复兴时期的台地园、法国勒诺特式宫苑、荷兰的宫苑和中国的山水园风格,同时还保留着中世纪英国修道院及都铎时代沉床园的园林风格。经过选择和消化,英国的造园家创造了自己的园林风格——自然画意园林。在欧洲文化中。

Until the end of the 17th century there was no true Englishgardens style but rather a following of the formal and architectural style from Europe,such as Italian Terrace garden,French Court Park by Andre Le Notre style, Dutch intimate garden, Chinese Natural Water-Hill garden and of course English Monastic garden plus the native Tuder garden.After selecting and digesting these European styles the English garden designers created their own style…The natural picturesque style…the so called English Garden. In European culture the English were the first people to conceive a love of 'nature' as a style of gardening.All would agree that Chiswick House Park was a starting point in the 18th century mainly designed by William Kent who was a leader and the first great artist of the picturesque movement of garden designers.The modern tradition which is still evolving, has not yet crystallized but certain trends can be discerned and to see them at their clearest and best the English look to northern Europe and to America on the other.
