John Updike, as one of the most influential contemporary American writers, has produced many novels and achieved great literary success. He finds what is most worthwhile to depict in the small town of middle class and his fiction reveals his deep insight into the ambiguous and dilemmatic problems confronting the American society. The Rabbit novels are most characteristic of Updikean fiction and represent the author’s highest literary achievements. This thesis intends to explore the relationship between Updike’s predominant fictional concern and the theme as exemplified in his Rabbit novels.
