State image involves an overall understanding and estimation of the international community upon a nation,as well as the most important intangible assets of any sovereign states.Media is a main constructor of the state image. This study examines and analyzes how China's respective elite newspapers portray the United States through a content analysis of People's Daily's coverage over a ten-year period,1997 to 2006.It is found that People's Daily portrays the United States with a great number of news reports on a variety of topics, and most of them are with an in-depth analysis. The study also shows that People's Daily relies on fewer news sources when covering America affairs.Meanwhile, based on a media-ecological analysis on the findings,it is pinpointed that media self-system and other social subsidiary-systems on some degrees do have an impact in shaping media portrayals of the United States.
