The effect of changing the size of access hole on the behavior of steel beam-column moment connections is studied through 3D nonlinear finite-element analyses of connection subassemblies. The analytical results show that increasing the length of access hole remarkably minimizes the potential of fracture at the groove welds of beam-column interface and the root of access hole, therefore the potential of brittle failures in the beam flange is reduced. But over increasing the length of the access hole will give rise to the loss of lateral stability of beam flange.Reducing the height of the access hole only does benefit to the standard connection in common use whose length of the access hole is shorter; for the fracture potential at the root of the access hole is minimized.
