LG Chem, Ltd. announced on November29th, 2005 that it developed a new envi-ronment-friendly process to mass-pro-duce terephthalaldehyde (TPAL). TPAL is an organic synthesis interme-diate for dyestuffs, pharmaceuticals, spe-cialty polymers, electronic materials, andat present it is mostly used to producefluorescent whitening agents. The existing TPAL production processinvolves chlorination of para-xylene andhydrolysis of the chlorinated xylene.
