Abstract On the basis of the inner-most crux of coal industry sustainable development i.e. the question of resources and environment, the article makes an analysis of the development and application of the remote sensing, GIS and GPS (so called 3S technology) in the sustainable development of the coal industry and their advantages. The article also makes a thorough analysis of the 3S technology in respect of their application in coal exploration, resources monitoring, environmental monitoring and controlling and setting up resources and environment information system for coal mining areas.
