Analysis of John Updike's "Separating" from the Perspective of Feminism

约翰·厄普代克被公认为美国最优秀的小说家之一,他的文风对许多作家产生了巨大影响。他颇为明显的男权思想更是遭到了女权主义的猛烈抨击,甚至使他不得不在自己的创作中"自觉自愿"地按照女权主义的思想去写作。但在小说《分居》中,男性享受着女性为婚姻和家庭默默付出的一切,女性是叛逆、不成熟的、对家人冷淡、引诱男人背叛家庭和爱情的象征,女性在家中也没有发言权,可见作家其对女性的偏见和男权主义倾向。

John Updike is one of the best writers in America,who have influenced a lot of writers.However,he was so criticized for male chauvinism in his works that he had to follow feminism in later writing sometimes.Although he denied his style of male chauvinism,in 'Separating',men just took women's plenty of sacrifices for granted while women were symbols of being rebellious,immature,and indifferent to family and seducing married men.Besides,women didn't have much their says in that novel,which shows John Updike's style of male chauvinism.
