The novel La joueuse de go has been highly acclaimed in France.It is maintained in this paper that this is largely due to the author Shan Sa's effective use of Oriental symbols and philosophical ideas together with her unusual narrative strategy based on Go chess to tell the story—a romance fraught with psychological struggles. The novel reveals the author's profound speculation about the universal conditions of human beings.
