Positioning Anchee Min's autobiographical novel,Red Azalea, within the context of discourses of gender, immigration, and multiculturalism in the U.S.,this essay reads Min's text as a kind of immigrant narrative that supports U.S.myths of multiculturalism and democracy through its development of key tropes of so-called liberal humanism.Sexuality and the private space of affect become contested sites between Min's agency and her portrayal of coercion by the state, and ultimately serve to develop her burgeoning identity as a model immigrant subject in the U.S.
