This essay offers an interpretation of Startling Moon, The Magpie Bridge, and The Touch, three novels in English by Liu Hong,a Chinese novelist settled in England. The essay argues that Liu Hong,as a diasporic writer in double contextualization, creatively applies Chinese traditional symbols against the Western background, thus rejuvenating those conventional symbols and achieving defamiliarization.Thereby she foregrounds the poetic qualities, and the Chineseness in those qualities,in her novels.
