清代道咸年间的边疆史地学研究 ,在继承前人的基础上 ,特别是在内忧外患与时势的激荡下 ,表现出了前所未有的发展新趋势和新特征。在这一时期 ,中俄边疆史地研究兴起 ;西北边疆史地学空前兴盛 ,并且与蒙元史研究相并发展 ;边疆史地研究中有明显的经世致用目的 ,方法上注重文献考辨与实地考察相结合。并且 ,此一时期边疆史地研究呈现出的空前的忧患意识和世界性意识 。

The historio-geographical studies of the history of frontiers between the Dao-Xian times in the Qing Dynasty exhibited unprecedented new trends of development and new characteristics on the basis of inheriting from the predecessors, especially as stirred by the domestic disturbances and foreign aggressions and the actual political circumstances. During this time, the historio-geographical studies of the Sino-Russian frontiers emerged while the historio-geographical studies of the Northwestern frontiers thrived on an unprecedented scale which paralleled with the development of the studies of the Mongolian-Yuan history. The historio-geographical studies of the frontiers exhibited unprecedented consciousness of misery, crisis and world awareness with distinctive characteristics of the times.
