文章介绍了南北朝著名小说家殷芸的生平。认为《殷芸小说》是一部涉及千余年历史发展过程中有关人物琐事逸闻的杂记式小说作品。该书虽为“野史”,却有一定的文献学意义。而其文学价值首先体现在它善于刻画人物性格,其次它独具特色,一是取材范围较以前扩大,二是写法与前人不同。《殷芸小说》奠定了殷芸在文学史上的地位。
