Dream of the Read Chamber and Jinpingmei demonstrate two different approaches to literary aesthetics: while the former puts an emphasis on pure love, the latter attaches importance to sexuality. This disparity is not only the result of the different social norms and fashions of the Qing and Ming Dynasties, but that of the different artistic cultivation and aesthetic tastes of their authors-Cao Xueqin and Lanling Xiaoxiaosheng.
