Twin Stars over Toronto:A Comparison of Marshall McLuhan and Harold A.Innis

传播学的加拿大学派有两位巨匠。一是麦克卢汉,一是伊尼斯。麦克卢汉曾谦称自己是伊尼斯的“注脚”。他们开创的“媒介决定论”,业已证明具有相当的前瞻性。麦克卢汉以其媒介“延伸论”、“迅息论”和“冷热论”著称。伊尼斯以其“偏向论”和“帝国论”闻名。本文介绍两位巨人的贡献,比较两人治学方法的异同。

As it is known to all,two giants have s hone over the Canadian school of comm utation studies.They are Marshall McLuhan a nd Harold A.Innis.While the former h as been very much covered in China,the latter unfortu nately is not very much heard yet.There is therefore an urgent need to look at his pioneering role in the said school.Marshall McLuhan,r eferring to himself as'a footnote'to Innis,is known for his theories of'extension','message'and'hot and cool',while Harold A.Innis is noted for his argum ents of'the bias of communication and mediaand types of'empire'.This essay is a modest comparison of these two giants in the ways of ideas a nd rhetoric.
