Effects of electron activity (pε) and pH on the stability of chlorine dioxide (ClO 2) are discussed in the pε-pH diagrams of chlorine system. If disproportionation rate of ClO 2 into chlorate is low enough,ClO 2 would be relatively stable and coexist with chlorite (pε 17.63 ClO 2 and pH>9.68), molecular chlorine (pH<0.92), or chloride ion (pH 0.92-9.68). When chlorine system has already reached the ultimate equilibria, ClO 2 is a stable species only in strongly acid media. As the acidity decreases, ClO 2 will disproportionate into chlorate and molecular chlorine. Aqueous ClO 2 is unstable within the normal pH range.
