The seed coat, which is about 85.9% the total weight of air dried seed of Cyclocarya paliurus (Batal.) Iljinskaja ,is permeable by water. After the pretretment by concentrated H 2 SO 4 for 9 hours, which reduced the weight of the seed by about 28.8%. Afte the H 2 SO 4 pretreatment increased the air permeability and the mechanical restraint of the seed coat. After cold stratification over winter in moistened sand with 500 mg/L GA 3 solution, the pretreated seeds by concentrated H 2 SO 4 for 9.5 hours had 87.5% germination, while the control seeds did not germination. Seeds of breaking dormancy, the optimum temperature for their germination was 25℃.
