汉字性质问题研究,贯穿整个20世纪,学者们从汉外比较、古今比较的角度,通过多个层面对汉字的性质进行了卓有成效的探讨。"方式论"与"单位论"之争的本质在于研究视角的不同,从语言与文字的关系来看,"表意说"具有明显的缺失,"语素说"可以体现汉字的基本性质。

Studies on the nature of Chinese characters abound throughout the 20th century. Meaningful outcome had been made by comparing Chinese with foreign languages and by comparing ancient with modern Chinese. The debate on the mode theory and the unit theory actually comes out of different research perspective. From the point of view of the relationship between language and characters, ideographic theory has obvious deficiency; while morphemic theory can reflect the nature of Chinese characters.
