Despite Asian American literature founder Frank Chin’s urgent call for distinguishing between“real”and“fake”Asian American writers in the early1990s,actually Asian Americans must rely on“performance”in the construction of their cultural identities.Such a performance does not constitute“imposture,”but amounts to“impersonation,”which undermines, yet does not actual cultural identity itself.A natural byproduct of Orientalism under the rein of white racial dominance in America,it represents the only means through which Asian American cultural identity and subjectivity can come into existence and maintain its rationale.
