Inheritance and Construction——The Cultural Identity of Characters in The Portrait of a Lady

亨利·詹姆斯的小说《贵妇人画像》是他写作生涯早期"国际主题"的佳品,也是最早一批呈现身处异质文化中人们的身份困境的作品,这部作品中的美国人几乎都是身处欧陆文化中的异乡客。小说中的美国主人公们在两种文化的碰撞中徘徊、寻觅、挣扎,最终在文化夹缝中重新建立正确的文化身份。本文旨在分析主人公的这一过程,并为当代人在文化交流和融合日益频繁的今天如何建构自己的文化身份提供借鉴。

The Portrait of a Lady is not only a masterpiece of international theme written by Henry James but also an early work,which embodies identity predicment of people in different cultural environment.Most of the characters in Jame’s novels are American expatriates in Europe.The paper aims to analyze the process during which the characters,who confront the conflict between two different cultures in Britain inherit the original cultural identity,or search,or consturct a new identity,and finally realise the significance of constructing a wholesome cultural identity.It further provides a reference to morden people in constructing their own cultural identities in today’s world,where cultural communication,fusion and conflict become more common.
